No that isn't what John was doing at all. It's simply like if you were looking
for something in a library, and couldn't find what you want, the librarian
might well point out to you that you are in the wrong section for the
particular information you are seeking.
The http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnu-misc-discuss list that John
pointed at is the section of this 'library' that would be the best place for
you to search for the information you want, because that is the section set
aside for that topic.
Here, on this list, the topic is (supposed to be) about why Vista is bad, it's
inherent DRM problems, etc. This predisposes an underlying assumption that
Free Software is a good thing --we take that as a given around this section
of the 'library'.
I hope my library analogy has made some sense to you. I hope you find your
answers, and I'm sure the link
http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnu-misc-discuss is a good place to
start.
I am sure that I can say there is no one here that wishes to make you feel
that we want you (or anyone!) to think they are just stuck with Microsoft and
such related products.
It's just this isn't the place for questioning the relative merits of Free
Software vs Proprietary software --as John said, for us that issue is moot.
Please do drop in and ask your questions at the
http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnu-misc-discuss list.
Really, we all feel this way, I'm sure. We like it when smart, sharp people
begin to question these issues for (from our view point) that is the start on
the road to understanding.
It's just this isn't the place to start by questioning --we (here) have all
already decided that issue and are now off about other business.
Please do join and take part at
http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnu-misc-discuss and many other places
where the "which is better" question may be appropriate.
With warmest regards,
Don.

Wow, this discussion is being cut off already? There are so many points I
disagree with - and if I am not convinced then I am sure there must be many
others out there like me who will never get to understand the whole "free"
software movement.
You've already decided that free software is a good thing?? Well, how can
you promote that idea when the people you need to convert don't understand
it??
Apparently there is no point to this anymore, I will just have to stay with
Microsoft and Vista.
Good luck in your efforts.

Note that this list is for the coordination of a campaign to promote free
software.
The idea that free software is a good thing is something we've already
decided.
Debate about that should take place elsewhere so we don't drown people who
signed up for this list with messages they don't want.
I might suggest <http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnu-misc-discuss> for
those interested in debate on this topic.
