It's kind of a similar model, if you think about it (assuming it's
correct that blueprints are PD).  Anyone can build their house at no
charge off a blueprint, but architects still make money.  How?  They
charge for innovations.  Nobody wants to have the same house as everyone
else, so they pay an architect to come up with a clever idea.  This is
the same as paying for custom free software.
