I'm confused are you  talking about the non-free nvidia drivers or the 
free ones?
the non-free unfortunately are used or available on non-free GNU/Linux 
distros,
also the GNU/Linux drivers from the nvidia website are also non-free..
Nvidia has no free drivers but there is a project that is working on 
this very hard and have made big progress...

to promote the non-free Nvidia drivers is awfully wrong better is to 
concentrate the energy creating Free drivers and helping those how 
already started to do so.
