Long story short, the reason I described Ubuntu as a poor example of 
freedon is the examples mentioned - they are indeed rather willing to go 
with ESRs approach of first gaining Linux popularity, and while doing 
this promoting closed drivers for the moment.
I find this pointless and damaging, and I think this should be stressed.
